Still awake

It is 4:00am and bed is still eight hours away. this song just came up on my play list and the lyrics seemed worth passing on. Most of the time it strikes very true.

Bare Naked Ladies Lyrics - Who Needs Sleep
Now I lay me down not to sleep.
I just get tangled in the sheets.
I swim in sweat 3 inches deep
Just lay back and claim defeat
Chapter read and lesson learned.
Turn the lights off while she burns.
So while she's 300 degrees,
I throw the sheets off and I freeze.
Chorus:
Lids down, I count sheep
I count heart beats.
The only thing that counts is that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around
Who needs sleep??
Well you're never gonna get it.
Who needs sleep??
Tell me, what's that for?
Who needs sleep??
You're happy wiith what you get and there's a guy that's been awake
since the 2nd world war.
Who needs sleep??
Well you're never gonna get it.
Who needs sleep??
Tell me, what's that for?
Who need sleep??
You happy with what you get and there's a guy that's been awake since
the 2nd world war.
My hands are locked up tight in fists
My mind is racing, filled with lists
of things to do and things I've done
Another sleepless night's begun.
(Chorus)
So much joy in life and so many pleasures all around
but the pleasure of insomnia is one I'd never found.
With all life has to offer, there's so much to be enjoyed
but the pleasures of insomnia are ones I can't avoid.
Lids down, I count sheep
I count heart beats.
The only thing that counts is that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around
Halla halla halla
Who needs sleep??
Well you're never gonna get it.
Who needs sleep??
Tell me, what's that for?
Who need sleep??
You hafta use what you get and there's a guy that's been awake since
the
2nd world war
Who needs sleep??
Well you're never gonna get it.
Who needs sleep??
Tell me, what's that for?
Who need sleep??
You hafta use what you get and there's a guy that's been awake since
the
2nd world war

Mommy. Where did poodles come from?

Along time ago when fire still was cutting edge, and the most popular name for boys was Og or some derivation there of, Man began domesticating aminals. Evidence seems to inicade that very early on he selected the noble wolf to be breed into a companion.

Dog. Mans best friend.

However Dogs were not simply bred as companions. They bred to bring out the traits most disired by there masters. Hounds to track prey. Sheppards to tend flocks. Huskies to mush. and St Bernards to carry liqure to avalanche stranded, ladderhosen wereing, yoddlers in the alps.

So with this in mind I ask. Where did poodles come from?

The Recent Past

Well this week school started back up. I am still tweeking my schedule but it looks like I am taking history, geology, managing personal finances, art and student government. The history class is a survey course of western history from prehistoric time up to the renaissance, It is taught by a teacher I have had before and really liked, should be an easy A for me and that is good because my GPA could use some help right now. Geology is a lab class that may challenge my ability to stay awake (I have already dozed off once) but I might not even need it so I may be dropping it. In student government I am the President of Inter-Club Council, this is probably the most intensive element of my school schedule and I don't even get transferable credit for it.

This past weekend I got to go for a decent bike ride for the first time since Christmas. I rode some of the bike path that follows the American River then rode a few miles of rolling hills then I rode back in to work, I think I got in about thirty five miles. It felt great. I think that part of why I have not been sleeping well is related to the lack of physical activity in my life lately. I don't think I had mentioned my not sleeping well... I have not been physically able to fall asleep before two or three in the mourning since switching back from the night shift, but I am not getting to sleep in past sixish. I have had sleep issues before but this is the worst they have been since high school, it had actually gotten to point were it interfered with my short term memory, but today I am almost back to what passes for normal. Back on the subject of exercising, It has been harder to get the jogging in than I thought it would be when I set the goal of doing it twice a week. The combination of biking and jogging has left me rather sore.

<>
I have also gone an two dates this past week, two different girls, but both were diner and a movie and, honestly, I don't like those kind of dates. You sit and eat (which makes a lot of girls self conscious) and then you sit in theater and don't look at each other or talk to each other for a few hours. The date on Wednesday was with a girl name Cheryl who I found I have a lot in common with. We ate at olive garden and saw National Treasure because we spent to much time at the restaurant waiting to be seated to make it to In Good Company. The company, the food, and the movie were all enjoyable.

Monday's date was to Racing Stripes and a Sub shop with Suzie, a girl I have had a bit of a thing for, I thought the movie was dumb and the philly cheese steak was disappointing.

<>
Lastly, I have discovered Discworld. For those of you who have not, it is a funny place on the back of four elephants who in turn are on the back of an giant turtle. The author is Terry Pratchett and if you enjoy silly yet fairly well written I'd recommend the series <>

On the whole things seem entirely back to normal after the better part of a month feeling like a bald inverted bat

A California Moment

With the exception of my mission in Virginia and a summer spent with my aunt and uncle in Utah I have lived all my life in northern California. But that doesn't mean I fit the stereotype of a 24 year old No. Cal, yeah I like to go camping and I don't think much of cars. I am a registered republican but would probably be a Libertarian if they didn't run so many whack jobs, and they changed their stance on drugs and immigration. But today I had a California moment, for the first time I had sushi with sashimi (raw fish) and I ate it with chopsticks while riding a bicycle. I have had sushi before but it always had it with imitation crab shrimp or tempura fish. The sushi was really pretty good, it had raw blue fin tuna seared ahi tuna and some fish in tempura, but the burp that came ten minutes later was rather unpleasant

Happy Friday

Happy Friday. I just got done with my last night shift for the time being. I have been training my replacement, a nice girl named Courtney. I think she will do a good job. I am glad to be going bad to "normal" hours. Although I never have a truly normal sleep pattern, my body has not really adjusted to the hours I have been keeping the past three weeks.
Training Courtney has been a breeze, she has worked at hotels before and so I just had to help her get used to our software. In between training we competed at varied flash games (tonight I beat collapse) and learned new words (we both love dictionary.com). One of the hardest things about night shift is not getting bored.
There are only a few days left until school starts back up and I still have a lot to do, I am working on a remodel of my parents bathroom and I know the project will drop off once school starts, so I ought to work hard on it this week. I also need to go for a ride, due mainly to bad weather and the night shift I have been off my bike since Christmas. Today I will be installing new shifters and if the bad weather breaks I would really like to put in twenty miles or so.
Also on today's agenda is harvesting lemons. I know a widow with a large a productive lemon tree who I go see each January to clean off her tree. I hate the thorns but love all the tasty things that come from fresh squeezed lemons (there are few things I won't do for a slice of lemon meringue.)
Well, there is much to do today so I had best go to bed.

Good morning

Today I spent most of the day sleeping, partially recovering from the weekend and partial just adjusting to working over night. I have the reputation in my family of being indefatigable, because I often will only get a few hours of sleep and yet seem lively and chipper the next day. But sooner or later it catches up and I must sleep. I wonder why we sleep, I personally believe it mainly is to help regulate brain temperature.
I actually did wake up for an hour in the middle of the day and tried to get a hold of a girl for a lunch date, but she was not home so I ate left overs for lunch then went back to bed. For diner I had a pear and some yogurt. After diner I read a chapter in His excellency, George Washington and then came into work.
Tomarrow I don't intend to sleep as long.

Happy New Years

I guess Neverland will be making yet another trip around the second star to the right. I am new at all this but I need a place to store my thoughts and share them, not to mention something to keep me sane during the night shift. If you have any pointers for a newbie feel free to share.
Well here goes nothing.
